Linking is very important to being known in search engines so your potential clients/customers can find you. These links should be related to your service or product. A good example is membership links for communities that you belong to. Not only will you have a link to them but you will also have a reciprocal link (them to you). Search engines rate you higher for reciprocal links so not only will you move up in the rankings but doing that will help your customers/clients find your web site easier.

Affiliations are website's that relate to your business or the type of business your clients/customers will be interested in. This type of affiliation is known as 'passive income'. affiliation links 'might' bring in extra money for your business, but in my opinion this certainly is not the entire purpose of them. affiliation links should be a product or service that you believe in. A product or service that you endorse.
Of course there are many businesses out there that make their living off of affiliations, and there is nothing wrong with this. Unless it is just one page at your website, it is better that you have a totally new website (or website's) for your affiliate promotions.
